Sakyamuni Buddha. Buddha in alabaster, seated in lotus position. Upper Burma, early 20th century Height: 38 cm Bhumisparsa mudra, the gesture of calling upon the Earth (Bhumisparsa mudra). The fingers of the right hand touch the ground, while the left hand is placed in the lap of the body, palm facing the sky. The legs are crossed, the soles of the feet facing upwards. This depiction of the Buddha evokes Sakyamuni's victory over the demon Mara and represents the most important moment in Buddhism, that of Awakening.
