SAVIGNOL (Simon). Important set of drawings and sketches by Simon Savignol (46 ff.) including a sketch for the famous cover of L'Assiette au beurre with his creation of César Tripet, a vagabond full of disrespectful humor. Simon Savignol was a pharmacist, caricaturist and politician born on September 17, 1866 and died on April 24, 1938. His work as a caricaturist in the early 20th century, signed Marius Savignol or Savignol, revealed a humanism that was often bitter but full of sympathy for the marginalized. A convinced anti-German, some of his cartoons anticipated the 1914-1918 conflict very early on. Among these is a virulent caricature of the anti-Semite Edouard Drumont. His satirical drawings were also published in Le Rire, Le Sourire and Les Galonnés.

No. 109 (Sunday, January 5, 1879) to No. 159 (December 21, 1879). One volume. Year 1879 complete. Each issue up to 131 consists of 4 pages with a double-page color cartoon by Gill in the middle. Except for issue 127, which was censored. From 132 onwards, the cartoon appears on the first page. - L'Eclipse. Fifth and sixth years. From n° 219 to 269, then 271 to 322. Two volumes. Complete years 1873 and 1874. Each issue consists of 4 pages with a double-page color cartoon by Gill on the cover.
