In-12 marbled calf, smooth ornate spine, brown marbled title page, gilt arms in center of boards, marbled boards (period binding). Handwritten price list signed by Joseph-François-Louis de MALIDE (1730-1812), bishop of Avranches, with his arms stamped on the front cover. Bishop of Avranches (1766), Montpellier (1774) and Reims (1778), deputy to the Estates-General of 1789. After the promulgation of the Constitution civile du clergé on April 2, 1790, he refused to become constitutional bishop of Hérault and went into exile in London, England, in 1791. When Pope Pius VII asked him to resign his see of Montpellier in September 1801, he refused, and was one of several bishops to protest to the pontiff in December 1801. Unable to return to France, he died in exile in London in 1812. Ex-libris Charles de Beaurepaire.
