Description

Herbert KITZEL (1928-1978) "Jazz" (1957) Watercolour - on width, matted cut-out, 43 cm x 51cm, signed and dated 57 on the lower right, exhibition label Deutscher Künstlerbund 7. Exhibition Berlin, Hochschule für bildende Künste In July 1957 Herbert Kitzel was appointed as a teacher at the Kunsthochschule Karlsruhe and emigrated to the West in 1958 after submitting an application. After the end of the Second World War, 1945-1950, he studied at Burg Giebichenstein and is one of the most important artists and representatives of the Halle School. Herbert Kitzel insisted on an art scene that painted independently of the state and the functionaries of the GDR. He could not indulge in the officially desired socialist realism, "The grey over Halle". Here he created his pictorial worlds, melancholic in character, radiating colour, painted decisively out of the grey: Pictures of artists, jugglers, harlequins, jazz musicians.
