It was the best-selling model after the 2cv and AX, with 2.5 million units sold, a production run that ended in 1986. The GS was a mid-range family sedan with streamlined, highly aerodynamic lines, and was the first French car to feature curved side windows. Equipped with a hydraulic power unit acting on the 4 disc brakes, it received a brand-new 4-cylinder, air-cooled engine, positioned in the front overhang, developing 55.5 hp. Its high level of comfort won it the European Car of the Year award in 1971.
