Knight's Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic in enameled vermeil, two-part gold obverse center with ribbon; width: 45.5mm; gross weight: 3.13 gr. A 1927 Peace in Morocco medal in silver metal with ribbon and an "IFNI SAHARA" medal (1958), 1st type with imperial crown, very domed with movable crown, arms on reverse and miniature reduction. 20th century; very good condition

Historical school of the 19th century. The presentation of Rubens' Descent from the Cross to Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella of Habsburg, daughter of King Philip II of Spain. Oil (restorations and small chips). Height 156 cm - Width : 117 cm Against the backdrop of the Counter-Reformation wars, the Archduke and his wife, fervent Catholics, asked Rubens, the Court's official painter, for numerous commissions. Around 1677, the Capuchin nuns of Lille asked Rubens to paint a Descent from the Cross for their church. The figures depicted in the painting would be : - Woman on the left is Madame Isabella BRANTE (1591-1626) first wife of RUBENS, with whom he had three children: Serena (1611), Albert (1618), Nicolas (1619). - The young boy turned and the one behind Isabella BRANTE are probably her two sons, Nicolas (?) and Albert (?). The latter, probably absent from the scene, would have been added afterwards by the painter. - The man seated on the left is thought to be RUBENS himself. His leg wound would never have been recorded. His gaze is directed at the patron. - The two richly dressed figures on the right are Albert d'AUTRICHE and Isabelle Claire Eugénie d'AUTRICHE, the two patrons who welcomed the artist into their court.
