In Lucca, per Salvatore e Giandomenico Marescandoli, 1733-1737. 2 volumes in-folio, (34)-575-(one blank) +(36of which the last blank)-645-(one blank)pp., one printed fold-out table, marbled fawn basane, ribbed spines with partitions and fleurons, garnet-toned title and giblets, filleted edges; worn bindings with epidermal marks and some leather loss, one giblet missing, several quires of the first volume unstamped, false title of the second volume reinforced on verso, some marginal dampening (contemporary binding). First edition of this vast collection of acts ("diplomas") issued by or concerning the Order of Malta, from its origins to the early eighteenth century. It also includes geographical and genealogical notes on the Frankish principalities of the Holy Land, and biographies of the Grand Masters of Rhodes and Malta. This "important work [...] still enjoys a great reputation" (Saffroy, vol.I, n°5275, which counts only 14 plates). Copper-engraved illustrations: hors texte, 3 folding maps of the Holy Land, Rhodes and Malta, and 13 plates of sigillographic or numismatic representations; in the text, 5 vignettes, including a view of Fort Manoel in Malta, repeated twice. -With several woodcuts in the text.
