Libya - [VATTIER DE BOURVILLE (Charles-Joseph-Auguste)]. Minutes of my correspondence, in lieu of copies of letters. Commenced in Tripoli de Barbarie this month of 7bre 1823. [MANUSCRIT]. Sl, [1823-1824]. In-4, [41] ff. in average, legible handwriting (approx. 25 lines per page), erasures and strikethroughs, in leaves, sewn, green silk laces. Very rare unpublished document on the French presence in Libya. This is the private correspondence register containing the draft letters of Charles-Joseph-Auguste-Désiré Vattier de Bourville, appointed on September 14, 1821 as Chancellor-Interpreter at the French Consulate General in Tripoli (now in Libya, not to be confused with Tripoli in Syria, in present-day Lebanon, which was one of Joseph's later posts). Among his correspondents were Count Alexis de Noailles (1783-1835), Madame Lhuillier (superior of the Ursulines of Versailles), Father Pierre Ronsin (1771-1846, one of the French Jesuits who had worked for the restoration of the Society), the physician Charles-Emmanuel Gaultier de Claubry (1785-1855), Jean-Honoré Fortoul, a Marseille solicitor and barrister who was also his brother-in-law and Bienaimé's tutor, and a cousin Latil de Thimécourt (from Trévoux). A number of other consular agents were also among the recipients of the letters.
