Until the 19th century, the lake was regarded as a mystical place shrouded in legend that was still little discovered, let alone familiar. In keeping with this impression, our scene is mysterious. The scene is only enlivened by a few staffage figures on the beach. One of them is a man working as a fisherman. Accompanied by his dog, he is casting his fishing rod, about to snatch the next catch from the sea. - Stylistically, the work can be assigned to the Romantic period; the scene radiates a dark, almost morbid beauty. Oil on wood panel. Framed in a gold-colored stucco frame of the period. Inscribed on the verso with a label with work details by an unknown hand. - Slight rubbing along the edges and occasional losses of color as traces of framing.
