Wilhelm Theodor Nocken studied landscape painting under Johann Wilhelm Schirme at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art from 1847-1851, during which time he received a one-year scholarship. He completed his studies in 1851 and from then on exhibited regularly. His works are artistically recognizable due to their motifs, which focus on Bavarian and Tyrolean mountain views, lovingly used staffage figures, dramatic lighting and, finally, the perspective of the distant view.
