Max Clarenbach began his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art at the age of 13, where he attended the landscape class of Eugen Dücker (1841-1916). In 1917, he succeeded his teacher, a position he would hold for almost three decades. The atmospheric depictions of the Rhine floodplains in their seasonally changing moods are among the most influential works in his oeuvre.
