Stückelberg, ErnstHerds resting on the seashore. Circa 1856 - 1860. oil on canvas. 66 cm x 111.5 cm. Titled verso on an old piece of wood mounted to the stretcher, additionally inscribed by another hand. Framed. - Slight paint abrasion in places along the margins as a trace of framing. During his training, he was able to establish contacts with artists such as Hieronymus Hess, Ludwig Adam Kelterborn and Anselm Feuerbach and later became acquainted with Arnold Böcklin and Gottfried Keller. He studied at the Munich Art Academy from 1854-1856. After graduating, Stückelberg traveled to Italy in 1856 and visited Rome and Florence. He remained in Italy until 1860 and experienced fruitful, creative years there. He deliberately traveled to remote regions and mountain villages in order to devote himself to contemplative country life. Our scene with shepherds probably dates from this period. Stückelberg deliberately liberates his subject from the bucolic pictorial tradition and confidently shows a realism characterized by strong contours, a layered composition and a canvas worked with a dry brush that impressively conveys the shimmering heat of the moment.
