FLORIAN (Jean-Pierre CLARIS de). Galatée, pastoral novel imitated from Cervantes. Paris, Didot l'aîné, 1783. In-18, garnet-red morocco, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, friezes and fleurons, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt filleted edges and headpieces, gilt edges, gilt roulette on back covers (period binding). 7 engraved plates hors-texte (including a frontispiece, the dedication to the Duchess of Chartres surmounted by her arms, a portrait of Cervantes and 4 vignettes by Guyard after Flouest, for the text). First edition of this imitation of the homonymous novel by Cervantes (La Galatea, 1585), the first novel by Florian (1755-1794) and a huge success. Very slight dark stain on the second cover, some very light spotting at the bottom of a few pages, otherwise a very fine copy. (Cohen, 399.)

A frontispiece portrait engraved by Laplace after Clément and 4 figures by Monnet for Guillaume Tell. With an additional figure by Queverdo added on p. 41 (Florian's tomb) not announced in the title.
