First edition. - Goedeke V, 419, 10. KNLL XV, 244f. Coll. Borst 958. coll. Maassen. I, 4133, Tresoldi 87 - "Follow the truth and cultivate it, protect justice, want and do the good for all in the same way, fear nothing" so the motto on the engraved title. Johann Gottfried Seume's (1763-1810) perhaps most famous travelogue in German literature, in which the comfortable and uplifting title 'Spaziergang' (Walk) contrasts with a journey on foot from Grimma/Leipzig via Vienna, Venice, Rome and Naples to Syracuse and back via Milan, Zurich, Paris and Frankfurt am Main, on which he repeatedly finds himself in very threatening situations. He published this fascinating work of great cultural-historical significance at a time when there were still very few travelogues. He was less interested in the art treasures and ruins than in the political, economic and social circumstances of the country and its people. The frontispiece copperplate shows a centaur with a raised drinking glass and is drawn by Schnorr von Carolsfeld, who traveled with him to Vienna. - The extremely rare printed title with the publisher's inscription "Dresden, Hartknoch, 1803" is also missing here, as in almost all copies. Unprofessionally restored loss in the outer white margin of p. 95/96. Moderate brown spotting throughout. A neat copy. Italy - With engraved frontispiece a. title vignette.
