La Liberté patronne des Français, France, circa 1790 A large, folded revolutionary fan, with a double sheet of engraved paper enhanced in color. On a blue background dotted with medallions evoking intaglios, a central cartel features revolutionaries, peasants and soldiers, paying homage to Liberty perched on a pedestal, wearing a lictor beam surmounted by a Phrygian cap, and holding an egalitarian triangle. Green paper reverse. Wooden frame. Varnished plumes. H.t. 40 cm-H.f. 20 cm (good condition, wear)

Date: 1854 Description: Portrait of a friend sitting with his leg crossed. A Jacobin cap can be seen on the young man's head, which has been a symbol of freedom and an expression of republican sentiment in France since the French Revolution. Keywords: Portrait, Friendship portrait, Phrygian cap, Republican, Intellectual, Artist, 19th century, Romanticism, Portraits, France, Size: Paper: 22,8 cm x 18,1 cm (9 x 7,1 in) Condition: Rather good condition. The sheet is slightly discoloured and pale foxing due to its age. Individual somewhat darker stains recognisable on the sitter's arm and at the bottom. Discolouration from an old mount in the lower right.
