Rome et se trouve à Paris, Le Jay, 1774, 3 volumes. 8 by 14.5 cm. (4)-engraved portrait-CXXXVI-214; (4)-323; 461-(3) pages. Contemporary full marbled basane, smooth spine decorated, red title page. Small crack over 2.5 cm on a spine of volume 3 (not serious), otherwise very good condition of binding. Very good condition inside (a small marginal stain on one page, not serious). One of three editions published by Le Jay in 1774. The third volume, bilingual, joins the Italian text to the French, and is attributed to MONTAIGNE (the account of the beginning of the voyage being attributed to his secretary). After the publication of his Essais in 1580, Montaigne spent six months in Rome. The text of his travel journal has been compiled and annotated by Meusnier de Querlon, based on the unpublished, semi-autograph manuscript discovered by Abbé Prunis in the papers of Montaigne's former château.

Contemporary army-green silk-grained half-percaline with corners, untrimmed, headpieces on spines, printed covers preserved. €1,200 Head of the series of the most formidable travel journal of the second half of the 19th century. It offers in pre-publication all the great exploration stories - in original French editions or in translation - of the period, especially those from the last terra incognita: Central Africa and the Poles. Aware of new readers' interest in all that was stirring minds at the time, Louis Hachette sought to surround himself with enterprising collaborators to whom he could entrust the direction of new collections. Édouard Charton had founded and directed the Magasin pittoresque in 1833, then helped launch L'Illustration in 1843. Louis Hachette entrusted him with the management of this new journal devoted to travel, which was to introduce readers to the new expeditions that were setting out to discover the world, with the editor responsible for "informing his readers [...] of the fatigues they have endured, the dangers of all kinds they have encountered, the curiosities of the countries they have visited, and the manners and customs of the inhabitants". (Archives Hachette, quoted by J.-Y. Mollier). Numerous woodcut illustrations in and out of text. Exceptional edition on chine from the first twenty years of publication. Spotting due to damp on some lower corners, but overall of fine quality.

Tiré des journaux & autres papiers & publié par Richard Walter [...] Traduit de l'anglois [par Élie de Joncourt]. Amsterdam and Leipzig, Arkstée & Merkus, 1749. In-4, marbled basane, ornate ribbed spine, red morocco title-piece, red pages (period binding). Old epidermures, corners worn. First French edition, illustrated with 34 engraved plates of maps and views, including a map of South America, a plan of Manila Bay and a map of the Philippine Islands. This round-the-world voyage was highly acclaimed, and the account was published in 1748 by chaplain Richard Walter, based on the diaries of several of the Centurion's officers. Light spotting, paper slightly curled.
