Alabastron; Egypt, New Empire, 18th Dynasty, c. 1580 BC. Alabaster. Measurements: 11 x 4.5 cm. As is usual in the typology of alabastron vases, the one in question, from the Ptolemaic period, has an ellipsoidal body, slightly elongated and with a rounded base, a narrow neck (to pour its contents drop by drop) and a wide mouth to allow the application of the oil on the skin. Its origin dates back to around 1000 BC, in Ancient Egypt, as opaque glass or alabaster vessels, they were also manufactured in Assyria in 600 BC, and the second century BC in Syria and Canaan. It spread through Ancient Greece to other parts of the classical world. Although they usually lack handles, in many cases they have a pierced ear that allowed the introduction of a string to facilitate their manipulation.
