Description

Female idol. Syro-Hitian antiquity, 2nd millennium BC. Terracotta. Lower and upper area slightly damaged. Provenance: Acquired in Galería arqueológica J. V., Spain, 2017. Spanish export license dated November 2023. Measurements: 16 cm. Figurines like this one have distinctive heads, which can be quite bird-like in appearance. They have small eyes made of incised or punctured pellets, and a large pinched nose; the mouth is absent and the chin is usually absent as well or only slightly indicated. Experts are also unsure of their exact function. Some believe they are votive offerings or amulets to a mother-goddess, while others call them fertility goddesses, which some scholars question because, in their opinion, the figures lack an exaggerated sexual anatomy.
