Description

Applique of the god Eros; Rome, 2nd century A.D. Bronze. It has a small hole in the base and mineral deposits on its surface. Measurements: 6 x 4 cm (without base). Roman cast bronze seated Eros. The infantile god with a plump face. Represented with his young naked body, seated on a rock with his legs open. His raised left hand probably holds a small dolphin. With long curly hair and detailed modeling of his facial features, probably an applique or ornamental accessory for a chariot or piece of furniture. The Romans brought two important innovations to the world of sculpture: portraiture and historical relief, neither of which existed in the Greek world. However, they followed the Greek models for much of their sculptural production, a base that in Rome would be combined with the Etruscan tradition. It has a small hole at the base and mineral deposits on its surface.
