Description

Bust of Yakshi. Khusan, India, Mathura area, 1st-2nd century AD. Limestone. Provenance: Roseberys London, 2015. With export permit. Measurements: 31 x 21 x 7.5 cm. The bust we bid for here could be the representation of a yakshi or iaksi, a female nature spirit shared by Hindu, Buddhist and Jain mythologies. They are asuras, genies of nature who serve Kubera, the Hindu god of wealth, whose treasure they guard. Female counterpart of the iaksas, the iaksis represent fertility, and their origin dates back to ancient Neolithic rites. They are usually represented as beautiful nymphs dressed as princesses, with voluptuous forms, wide hips, narrow waist, broad shoulders and large breasts. In Indian art they symbolize the feminine ideal of beauty, and they are very popular images of great tradition, with sculptural representations dating back to the 3rd century BC.

Indian art Sandstone pillar depicting Yakshi. Uttar Pradesh, Mathura probable Kushan period. 2nd-3rd century AD. . Cm 64x17.50. The pillar was part of a series of elements that formed circular enclosures surrounding Buddhist reliquary monasteries or Stupas. The Kushan period especially in Mathura witnessed a flourishing building activity, dozens of monasteries and Stupas dotted the landscape of the region but to this day none of these buildings have survived intact, fragmentary elements of these stupendous constructions survive. The pillar we present depicts a Yakshi with parrot in the front.Yakshi are female nature spirits who embody fertility and prosperity, they are often depicted with trees, flowers, animals suggesting a transfer of creative energy between nature and humanity. The figure depicted in this pillar is delicately carved, looking down at her hand offering food to her parrot. She is richly adorned with a double necklace and large elaborate earrings that extend to her shoulders. The parrot is balanced on Yakshi's bracelets enhancing the three-dimensionality and movement of the composition. The parrot whose open beak is close to Yakshi's breast and nipple creates a highly suggestive moment of great intimacy. The top of the pillar depicts a miniature palace scene enlivened by three figures in a loggia who seem to be interacting with the scene below. The back is finely carved with three large lotus flowers.Provenance: Italian private collection. Purchased in Switzerland, Moonsail, July 13, 2007. Lot not exportable from Italy.
