HÉDOUIN (Edmond). Illustrations for Molière's theater drawn and engraved by Edmond Hédouin. Suite D. Paris, Damascène Morgand, 1888. Large format in-4 (32 x 22.5 cm for the leaves - 17 x 11 cm for the engraved subjects). Green half-basane, smooth spine, title page, covers preserved. Spine dusted. SUITE D (according to the classification given by publisher Damascène Morgand in his 1888 catalog): double suite (on Japon - signed and captioned in pencil on each plate - and on vélin du Marais avant la lettre) containing an engraved title, 2 leaves of table of plates, 2 frontispiece portraits and 68 full-page plates (2 x 34). This beautiful suite was sold at the time for the exorbitant sum of 300 gold francs (around 3,000 of today's euros). As the publisher Morgand indicated in his bulletin, this suite can be added to all editions of Molière's works published in in-8, in-4 or larger formats. It comprises an engraved title, a frontispiece (a portrait of Molière engraved after Mignard), 34 prints and a table. "Begun in 1878, by M. Hédouin, whose charm as an illustrator is well known, this suite must be considered this artist's capital work; marking the apogee of his talent, so elegant, so graceful and so correct, the artist obtained the reward for his efforts and his work by being awarded, in 1888, the Salon's Medal of Honor (engraving section)." (Morgand).
