First printing of "one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the 19th century" (Carteret). Two frontispieces on China paper and 800 woodcut vignettes after Tony Johannot in the text. Some foxing. Ex-libris Lucienne Corneux-Filloux (Carteret, III, 136; Vicaire II, 155).

Reverse: a Chinese servant at the foot of an elegant woman under her parasol in an architectural garden. Wooden mounting without decoration.
