Herbert Grass, Portrait of Maria Pos-Carloforti Portrait of the soprano Maria del Carloforti (1889 to 1965), seated on a chair in a magnificent red Renaissance robe, one hand resting on the chair, the other holding the inner surface of her hand in front of her chest in an effective gesture, In the background and in the lower part of the picture, a suggestive stage set, in the upper part of the picture Carloforti's name in antique-style letters, the singer and singing teacher, who later settled in New York, was one of the best sopranos of her time, as the Berlin theatre guide wrote in 1925, the year in which Grass portrayed her here: "The entire press praises her large-scale artistry and the unheard-of euphony of her bel canto soprano (Konzertführer Berlin 1925, p. 14.)."In 1925, she was on tour in southern Germany as the soprano in Handel's cantata "La Lucrezia", and Grass may have seen and portrayed Carloforti, who also sang - appropriately - at the Berlin Volksbühne in 1925 to Renaissance music, impressionistic portrait painting in strong colours, oil on canvas, signed lower left "Herbert Grass" and dated "1925", on the reverse signed and dated again as well as annotation "Forte Fortaye" with stylised sketch, small restoration to canvas, framed, folded dimensions approx. 86 x 70.5 cm. Artist information: German painter and graphic artist (1886 Mannheim - 1978 Heidelberg), 1902-07 studied at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig, subsequently based in Heidelberg, self-taught painter, source: Vollmer und Dressler.
