GROBON (19th), Ruins in the Campagna Romana, around 1850, Watercolor

Grobon (19th century): Ruins on the Via Appia in the Campagna Romana, c. 1850, Watercolor Technique: Watercolor on Paper Inscription: Lower right signed: "Grobon". Date: c. 1850 Description: The two ruins in this picture appear monumental and immovable, not least due to the wide plain with a range of hills only visible on the horizon. The presumably ancient remains are reminiscent of the ruins of the Circus of Maxentius, which are located on the famous Via Appia Antica near Rome. With earthy colours and glazed tones, the watercolourist, who probably came from the French Grobon family of artists, composes an atmospheric landscape scene under the warm Italian sun. Provenance: Sammlung Rosenthal Keywords: Italy, Rome, Campagna Romana, Ruin, Antiquity, Roman Empire, Via Appia Antica, 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Italy, Size: Paper: 18,5 cm x 38,3 cm (7,3 x 15,1 in)
