CARACCIOLO (*1761) after WILKINS (*1767), Forum of Pompeii, 1819, Aquatint Ludovico Caracciolo (1761 Rome - 1842 ) after Henry Wilkins (1767 - 1847 ): Forum of Pompeii, ruins of the ancient city on Mount Vesuvius, 1819, Aquatint Technique: Aquatint on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "H. Wilkins del. / L. Caracciolo inc.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Extrêmité du Forum au S.". Date: 1819 Description: The engraving illustrates an ancient landscape of ruins in the centre of Pompeii, harmoniously embedded in a mountainous environment. Crumbling columns and architectural elements dominate the picture, interspersed with a few figures that emphasise the former splendour.
