Second French edition of the first scientific expedition to Arabia, considered the best printing of Niebuhr's travel journals. This is the report of the Royal Danish Expedition (1761-1767) to the Arabian Peninsula: the first scientific expedition to this part of the world, financed by King Frederick V of Denmark. The maps are extremely valuable, depicting Oman, the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and Suez. The map of Yemen, which Niebuhr drew mile after mile across the country, made him famous. His map of the Red Sea led the English to rethink the route to India, exploiting the passage through Suez to avoid bypassing Africa, and was used by European explorers in the following century. His map of the Persian Gulf was the first to mention Kuwait, and he was the only one to call the country Yemen rather than Arabia Felix.
