BITTNER (*1786) after DE PIAN (*1784), Aleibeades, theatre backdrop, around 1818, Etching Norbert Bittner (1786 - 1851 ) after Antonio de Pian (1784 Venice - 1851 Vienna): Aleibeades, theatre backdrop with light-flooded throne room, c. 1818, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "N. Bittner f. N. 61 / de Pian invt.". At the lower part inscribed: "Aleibeades". Date: c. 1818 Description: This is a finely executed print depicting a classicist interior. In the foreground a columned architecture opens up, behind it a draped cloth reveals a bed and a burning candlelight. The room is characterised by strict symmetry and exact proportions, lending the scene a sublime stillness and order.
