BITTNER (*1786) after DE PIAN (*1784), Burnt down house, theatre backdrop, around 1818, Etching Norbert Bittner (1786 - 1851 ) after Antonio de Pian (1784 Venice - 1851 Vienna): Burnt down house, theatre backdrop with the ruins of a house, c. 1818, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "N. Bittner f. N. 74 / de Pian invt.". At the lower part inscribed by another person: "Das abgebrannte Haus". Date: c. 1818 Description: The present work shows a masterful etching depicting abandoned and decaying architecture. The focus is on the ruins of a building whose roof truss has partially collapsed, with exposed beam structures. The depiction is characterised by precise lines in the rich detail of the rubble and brick walls. Through the use of light and shadow, the work conveys an atmosphere of transience and abandonment.
