MECHAU (1745-1808), Ruins of the Aqua Marcia, 1799, Etching Jakob Wilhelm Mechau (1745 Leipzig - 1808 Dresden): Ruins of the Aqua Marcia Ancient aqueduct to supply Rome, 1799, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: lower left signed in the printing plate: "J. Mechau fece". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Avanzi dell'aqua Marzia Claudiae dell'Aniene vecchio fuori di Porta St. Giovanni". lower left dated: "Roma 1793". Date: 1799 Description: The precise etching shows the ruins of the ancient Aqua Marcia, visible in a pastoral scenario. Aqueduct elements and fragmented architecture are depicted in detail against a horizon under a cloudy sky. Probably a later print for the French-language edition of the "Malerisch radirte Prospekte von Italien".
