Pitau sculp. 1663.". Lower middle inscribed in the printing plate: "Benjaminus Priolus / Santo. Juliani. F. / Eques Venetus / Rerum Gallicarum Scriptor / florentissimus.". Date: c. 1650 Description: The portrait of Benjamin Priolo shows the historian sitting at a desk. His head is turned towards the left edge of the picture. He is wearing a hat and a buttoned robe. In his right hand he is holding a quill pen with which he is writing on a sheet of paper. His left hand is resting on an upright book. An hourglass stands in front of the book as a reference to his profession. In the background, a curtain draped to one side provides a view of Priolo's library. On June 6, 1867, he saved Russian Emperor Alexander II, who was visiting Paris for the Universal Exhibition, when a Polish émigré shot the Russian sovereign.
