Herman van Swanevelt (around 1600 Woerden - 1655 Paris): Boules players at the city gate, 17th century, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Hewrman van Swanevelt Inventor fecit ... à Paris chez Mondhare rue St. Jacques. cum privilegio Regis". Date: 17th century Description: The art-historical work reveals a detailed etching depicting an idyllic scene. In the foreground, we recognise a designed landscape with figures in period clothing following a path leading to a building with arches and a tiled roof. The middle ground is dominated by a ruin with Gothic window arches and partially preserved walls, embedded in lush vegetation. The background is characterised by an implied horizon and other architectural elements.
