After MERIAN (*1593), Siege of Bautzen, around 1620, Copper engraving After Matthäus Merian sen. (1593 Basel - 1650 Schwalbach): Siege of Bautzen as it was conquered by the Holy Roman Emperor of Saxony, c. 1620, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Inscription: At the upper part inscribed in the printing plate: "Abbildung der Statt Budissin oder Bautzen, wie dieselbe von Ch. F. Durchl. zu Sachsen erobert worden im Sept. Anno 1620". Date: c. 1620 Description: This artwork shows a detailed bird's eye view of a besieged city. It illustrates the fierce clashes by depicting billows of smoke rising above the city. Battle formations positioned in the foreground, both mounted and on foot, suggest a dynamic scene.
