ALFONS BORRELL PALAZÓN (Barcelona, 1931-2020). Untitled. 1998. Mixed media on thick paper. Signed and dated. Measurements: 74 x 112 cm; 82 x 120 cm (frame). Alfons Borrell is considered one of the maximum exponents of the lyrical abstraction in Spain. In this composition the influence of Rothko and his floating color fields can be appreciated. Starting from symmetries and gestural abstractions, his work progressively simplified. With large monochrome surfaces - color has a structural protagonism in Borrell's work - often centered on a single geometric figure or on a graphic sign or dimensioning, the lyricism and austerity of this painting brings it closer to the interior or introspective landscape than to the will of representation. Born in Barcelona but settled in Sabadell since he was a child, Alfons Borrell trained in the fifties with Hermen Anglada Camarasa in Mallorca and at the Escola de Belles Arts in Barcelona. In 1960 he was part of the Grup Gallot, a collective created in Sabadell that practiced actions halfway between action painting and surrealist automatism that questioned the limits of authorship and the pictorial medium. In 1971, he participated in the creation of Sala Tres in Sabadell. A close friend of Joan Brossa and artists such as Perejaume, throughout his extensive career, his pictorial abstraction has been consolidating as an expressive corpus of great intensity and solidity. Since his first solo exhibitions in the late fifties, Borrell has presented his work in prominent art venues in the country and also in France, Germany, the United States and Japan. The art critic Alexandre Cirici invited him to participate in the inaugural exhibition of the first Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona in the dome of the Coliseum Cinema in 1960. In 1978, he was part of the exhibition Seny i rauxa. 11 artistes catalans at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Among the numerous retrospectives of his work, those presented at the Centre Cultural Tecla Sala in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (2006), the Museu d'Art de Sabadell (2007) and the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona (2015) stand out.

FRANCESC SERRA CASTELLET (Barcelona, 1912 - Tossa, Girona, 1976). "Female nude". Oil on tablex. Presents sketch on the back. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 60 x 83 cm; 74 x 97 cm (frame). Painter and draftsman, Francesc Serra spent his youth in Granollers, Barcelona. Although he passed fleetingly through the School of La Lonja in Barcelona, he is basically a self-taught author. He had his first exhibition in 1932, at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, and participated in the Salones de Primavera between 1934 and 1936. In 1936 and 1937 he was a special guest of the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh, United States. He continued to hold individual exhibitions in Barcelona, mainly at the Sala Gaspar. A great admirer of Degas, he was especially influenced by his favorite theme, the feminine. Sporadically he also tackled other themes, such as the urban landscape, of which the series of Paris, presented in 1951, is worth mentioning. Likewise, with his portraits of the lead mine he approached the sensitive realism of Ingres. He won several awards, including the Sant Jordi of Barcelona (1953) and the first medals at the National Exhibitions of Madrid (1957) and Barcelona (1960). He collected several unpublished drawings under the title "Dibujos de Serra" (1973), with a prologue by Santos Torroella. Determined defender of realism in art and of traditional figuration against the avant-garde, he published the essay "La aventura del arte contemporáneo" (1953), with a prologue by Rafael Benet. He is represented in the Museums of Modern Art of Madrid and Barcelona and in the Museums of Fine Arts of l'Empordà and Sabadell.

RAFAEL DURANCAMPS I FOLGUERA (Sabadell, 1891 - Barcelona, 1979). "Outskirts of La Garriga". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. The frame needs restoration. Measurements: 40 x 61 cm; 56 x 80 cm (frame). Under a limpid sky, a suburban landscape with houses and sown fields unfolds. Except for a cyclist sliding along the dirt road, silence seems to be palpable in this faithful representation of the suburbs of La Garriga. Rafael Duran i Camps, better known as Durancamps, was a disciple of Vila Cinca at the Industrial School of Arts and Crafts in Sabadell. He later met Joaquín Mir, with whom he established a close relationship, and whose style influenced the colourful language of Durancamps's early period. He exhibited for the first time in 1917 at the Galerías Layetanas in Barcelona, and his success encouraged him to continue painting despite his family's opposition. He spent several periods in Madrid, where he studied the masters of the Prado Museum, and then travelled to Italy. He returned to Barcelona and took part in various competitions, winning important prizes such as the Masriera medal in 1920, as well as holding several exhibitions at the Sala Parés. In 1921 he travelled to Paris for the first time. His work at this time is close to Impressionism, but also shows the influences of Zurbarán, El Greco and Venetian colourism, combining the precision of the drawing with the gravity of the colour. In 1926 he returned to France and settled in Passy, where he lived until 1939. During these years he met Picasso, who encouraged him to hold exhibitions at the Zak gallery, where he enjoyed considerable success, which increased with his successive exhibitions. He returned to Spain and settled in San Sebastián, but continued to work closely with the Sala Parés, where he continued to hold exhibitions until his death. He also held various exhibitions in Madrid, Sabadell, Bilbao, Valencia, London and Philadelphia. Although his first period was influenced by Mir, Durancamps soon evolved towards a more personal conception, giving special prominence to the constructive line and a peculiar colouring of sober beauty. His still lifes, which he treated with a profusion of line and transparency, are a prodigy of serenity and elegance, with such a personal stamp that they escape any contemporary classification. His landscapes and genre scenes, especially the "capeas" in various Spanish villages, are highly emotive. The "skies of foreboding" that express the drama of the fiesta evoke his acute lyrical sense. He is represented in the Museums of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastián and Buenos Aires, as well as in a large number of Spanish and foreign collections.

ACHILLE BATTISTUZZI (Trieste - Barcelona, 1891). "View of Barcelona".1878. Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and located in the lower right corner. Attached to the back a label of Ramoneda & Barrachina. Measurements: 90 x 131 cm; 110 x 151 cm (frame). Achile Battistuzzi was an Italian painter who lived in Barcelona for most of his life, giving the Catalan capital magnificent port and urban views. In the painting shown here, Battistuzzi's mastery of working the space in a scenographic manner is evident, naturally superimposing the mountainous landscape (the Montjuïc area) and the port of Barcelona, which can be glimpsed in the background, criss-crossed with boats. The Reales Atarazanas (Royal Shipyards) divide the seafront and the margins of the city. In this panoramic view, the artist displays his skills as a veduttist and his bold use of light. The rural area with its peasants and the port area with its fishing boats form two parallel realities. Achille Battistuzzi settled in Barcelona around 1866. He specialised in landscape paintings with urban scenes. He was one of those who introduced Venetian Vedutism to Catalonia, following the influences of Canaletto and Guardi. His work "El pla de la Boqueria" is in the collection of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. Painted around 1873, the work was exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona in 1888. The Barcelona History Museum has nine works by the artist, and the Historical Archive of the City of Barcelona holds two oil paintings, two watercolours, two drawings and two engravings. The Maritime Museum of Barcelona holds the canvas entitled "Vista de las Reales Atarazanas de Barcelona y de la Montaña de Montjuïc" (View of the Royal Shipyards of Barcelona and Montjuïc Mountain).
