[Manuscrit, Malacologie] Generic characteristics of mollusks. In-8, approx. 84p. Early 19th-century manuscript describing the various known mollusks. It describes the 178 genera classified into 4 orders. At the end is a table to refer to the figures in the Methodical Encyclopedia. This appears to be an extract from Denys de Montfort's Histoire naturelle des mollusques (1799), in which only the descriptions of mollusks are included, without the associated commentaries. Contemporary half-basane, spine largely missing, volume nevertheless solid. Beautiful, very neat manuscript, with no erasures.

AN EBONY WOOD NETSUKE OF A SNAIL ON A NASUBI, EDO PERIOD AN EBONY WOOD NETSUKE OF A SNAIL ON A NASUBI, EDO PERIOD Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Depicting a snail clambering on a nasubi (eggplant) borne on a leafy stem, the underside well carved with a leaf. The foot of the mollusk is treated with fine ukibori pimples as is the area around the nasubi stem. Asymmetrical himotoshi through the underside. HEIGHT 3.5 cm Condition: With surface wear, scattered tiny nicks, and losses to the branch. Provenance: Canadian private collection.
