NASA. DEEP SPACE. LARGE FORMAT. A superb photographic picture that allows scientists to realize in Deep Space the detection of the crucial carbon molecule in a region of the Orion Nebula. Carbon compounds are the foundation of life as we know it, and the crucial carbon molecule plays an important role in the formation of more complex carbon-based molecules. This molecule was found by the Webb telescope inside a planet-forming disk surrounding a system of young stars. The disk was bombarded by UV radiation from nearby young stars. While UV radiation would generally be expected to destroy complex carbon molecules, the scientific team believes it may in fact be the energy source needed to give birth to the crucial carbon molecule and with it, more complex carbon molecules.
