Paul B. Pascal the Elder, Camels on the Riverbank Wide landscape of an African oasis with drinking camels on the riverbank and a Bedouin tent under palm trees, gouache, signed "P. Pascal" lower right, English label on the reverse, framed behind glass and mat with frame label "Paul Pascal 1832 French 1903", mat opening approx. 18.5 x 31 cm. Artist information: French painter, watercolourist and orientalist (1832 Toulouse to 1903 or 1905 Quebec/Canada), student at the Madrid Academy of Fine Arts, undertook study trips to Italy, Morocco, Egypt, Syria and Turkey, attended the Paris Salon in 1876-82 with oriental motifs, seascapes and landscapes in gouache, active in Paris, source: Thieme-Becker, Bénézit and Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon".

In-12 of (40) ff, 358 (numbered 334), (20) pp. brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt title (period binding). Genuine second edition of the Pensées (published one year after the original), with all errors corrected. There were two editions at this date: one with 334 pp. (this one) and the other with 365 pp. (Tchémerzine, IX, 73.) Some freckling. Handwritten bookplate on the flyleaf of Count Pons de Toulouse-Lautrec. Bookplate JM.
