Inscriptions: Signed ‘Gototei Kunisada’ 五渡亭国貞 with seal. One inscription to the back ‘Utagawa Kunisada’. Image SIZE 60 x 26 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 135 x 35 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Some foxing, stains, and soiling. The frame with usual traces of wear and holes. Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist. He is considered the most popular, prolific, and commercially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. ‘Gototei’ 五渡亭 was the mostly used go name until 1844. It literally means ‘Pavilion of the Fifth Ferry’ and refers to the ferry boat service owned by Kunisada´s family.
