By adapting traditional painting techniques to woodblock printing and publishing prints on loose paper rather than entire books, he helped bring Japanese prints to the lower classes. The surimono depicts an umbrella vendor with a shoulder pole with two straw baskets holding parasols and various fabrics. SIZE of the sheet 17.1 x 20.6 cm Condition: Good condition with minor wear and slightly trimmed margins. Smudges, few stains, a centerfold, and slight browning of paper. Gently mounted on a cardboard with a descriptive label. Provenance: From the private collection of Thomas Padua, Mühldorf, Germany. Thomas Padua was an artist and collector of Japanese woodblock prints who exhibited his surimono collection at the Olaf Gulbransson Museum, in ‘Glückwünsche aus Kyoto: Japanische Shijo-Surimono aus der Sammlung Thomas Padua,’ 3 November 2013 to 26 January 2014. Surimono, literally "printed matter", are high-quality, limited-edition, privately commissioned, woodblock-printed "greeting cards," mainly produced between the 1790s and the 1830s, and usually ordered for New Year's greetings. Surimono usually paired poetic texts with images, and both were typically intended to carry the cachet of "insider knowledge" for a cultured and well-educated audience.

Dimensions: 22.5 x 15.2 Condition: Good condition with minor wear and slight browning of paper. Fading, minor ink stains, wear to the cover, and some creasing. Pages missing and rebound. Museum comparison: A closely related woodblock print album is in the Freer Study Collection, the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution, accession number FSC-GR-780.402.
