19th century Japanese lacquered wood Buddhist shrine. With etched metal accents and carved floral and foliate motifs throughout the gilt facade, including two larger flowers along the upper third of the doors. Carved diamond-shaped pattern along the front of the base and carved scrollwork along the upper edge of the doors. Inscribed along the bottom. The shrine is without a figure. Provenance: Nakashian-O'Neil, St. Paul, Minnesota; Private Minnesota Collection. Height: 15 1/4 in x width: 11 in x depth: 5 1/4 in.

A GILT AND LACQUERED WOOD ZUSHI (PORTABLE SHRINE) CONTAINING A LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF BISHAMONTEN, EDO A GILT AND LACQUERED WOOD ZUSHI (PORTABLE SHRINE) CONTAINING A LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF BISHAMONTEN, EDO Japan, 18 th century, Edo period (1615-1878) The exterior covered in black lacquer and fitted with metal mounts and hinges chased with elaborate foliate designs against a ring-punched ground, the hinged lock in the form of a tama with foliate scrolls. The doors open to a carved and lacquered wood figure of Bishamonte, flanked by a nimbus clad in heavy armor standing atop two crouching demons on a very finely carved flaming cloud altar, covered in gold lacquer above a tiered pedestal with rinzu and foliate designs. The interior of the shrine covered in gold lacquer, with the upper part fitted with a stylized nyoi trim. HEIGHT 57.7 cm Condition: Good condition with some wear, minor age cracks, small flaking and losses to the lacquer, minor repairs and touchups, the figure relacquered, the hands and eyes lost. Provenance: From a private collection in England. Bishamonten is the Guardian King of the North, who is usually included in a group of Four Guardian Kings (Shitenno), protectors of the four directions. He is always depicted dressed in full armor, carrying a spear and a miniature pagoda. He is the protector of the righteous and is the Buddhist patron of warriors.

The doors with mixed metal fittings chased with scrolling vines and a kiku-shaped latch. With a few small slips of paper containing mantras. HEIGHT 15.1 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and light rubbing to the gold lacquer. Standing with his arms resting at his stomach, cradling an offering bowl, wearing a long robe draping over his right shoulder, neatly embellished with wavy hems. The face with a serene expression with heavy lidded brows, slender lips forming a calm smile, and pendulous lobes. The figure is covered in black lacquer with rich gilding. Mounted on a wood base. Provenance: Private collection in Belgium. Condition: Very good condition with wear, specially to gilding, age cracks, and the base uneven. Weight: 1,482 g (total) Dimensions: Height 40.6 cm (total)
