Chinese linen scroll painting depicting a brown dog standing in a landscape with blossoming lilies. With numerous red ink stamps throughout the painting; signed Han Huang. Similar in style to works painted by the Jesuit brother Giuseppe Castiglione (Italian, 1688-1766). Castiglione worked as an artist in the Imperial court of three Qing emperors. Provenance: By repute, purchased in London in 1967; Private Minnesota Collection. Sight; height: 41 in x width: 22 in. Framed; height: 51 in x width: 31 1/2 in x 1 in.

Maruyama Okyo (1733-95) is pivotal to Japanese art history for being one of the first artists to paint directly from nature rather than from paintings and sketches.
