Large Chinese Han Dynasty ceramic hu wine vessel in the form of bronze and lacquer prototypes. With a wide mouth, articulated rim, and an amber glaze characteristic of vessels of this period. The sides with incised decoration and taotie mask handles. This item has been thermoluminescence tested and the date of the last firing was estimated at 1,500 to 2,400 years ago. The TL test document is not included with this lot but an image is provided in the listing photographs. Height: 15 in x diameter: 13 1/2 in.

A copy of the report, issued by Oxford Authentication, accompanies this lot. China, 202 BC-220 AD. The compressed globular body following the archaistic bronze form, with molded taotie masks at the three feet and angular U-shaped, upright handles, the domed cover surmounted by three mythical beasts and penciled bands. Provenance: New York trade. Condition: Extensive wear, losses, encrustations, chips, scribbles, touchups, and repairs, all as expected as expected from Han dynasty excavations. A PAINTED POTTERY VASE, HU, HAN DYNASTY A PAINTED POTTERY VASE, HU, HAN DYNASTY China, 2nd century BC to 2nd century AD. Of globular form, rising from a gently spreading foot to a tall waisted neck with a banded mouth rim, applied to the shoulders with beast mask loop handles, and finely painted to the exterior in polychrome pigments. Depicting a hunting scene with a man on horseback aiming his bow and arrow at a mythical animal, the neck similarly painted with flaming swirls under a band of triangles. Provenance: Private Spanish collection. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Possibly old repairs and some touchups as generally expected from Han dynasty excavations. Few minor chips, light scratches, and soil encrustations. The paintings are presumably a later addition. Weight: 2,969 g Dimensions: Height 31.5 cm
