A PAIR OF INSIDE-PAINTED GLASS SNUFF BOTTLES, BY TING ERH-CHUNG A PAIR OF INSIDE-PAINTED GLASS SNUFF BOTTLES, BY TING ERH-CHUNG China, 1868-1935. Each of rectangular form with rounded corners, rising from an oval foot to a cylindrical neck. Well hollowed to form a double gourd and delicately painted with trees and plants growing from weathered rocks as well as inscribed with poems. Both signed and sealed Ting Erh-chung and dated the year of Bingshen (1836, 1896, 1956). The cinnabar lacquer stoppers with metal platelets and spoons. Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear and manufacturing irregularities. Moss. Ting Erh-chung, also known as Ting Yu-Keng, work is known for its unique subjects and graceful execution. Of flattened globular form, rising from an oval foot to a waisted neck with flat mouth, painted with a continuous scene of peonies, chrysanthemums, and other auspicious flowers on a black ground, with a lappet border and a band of scrolls around the neck. Provenance: From the Dorf private collection. In 1975, Ted Dorf received a cinnabar snuff bottle from a family member, sparking a lifelong interest for collecting these portable treasures. The Dorfs were also active in the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society and enjoyed collecting other forms of Chinese art as well, in addition traveling the globe and visiting museums. The Dorfs met at Temple University, and both held long careers in radio and broadcasting, serving on numerous company boards, truly sharing all aspects of their life with great passion. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, minor nibbling to the mouth and light surface scratches. The bottle finely painted in polychrome enamels to one side with two female figures dressed in flowing robes in a terrace setting, the reverse with a court lady resting on a weaved chaiselongue below bamboo. The rims framed by geometric bands. The recessed base with an apocryphal two-character Qianlong mark in blue enamels. Provenance: From the Dorf private collection.
