Chinese carved jade decorative sword guard. Of a pale jade with finely incised curling lines. Possibly emulating a taotie mask. Included in this auction is a box designed to hold this jade as well as a collection of 22 other lovely carved works also offered here. Provenance: Collection of Jerry O'Brien, Wichita, Kansas; thence by descent. Jerry O'Brien (February 6, 1902-June 2, 1951) was a business mogul and public figure in Wichita, Kansas throughout the first half of the 20th century. He began working at Wilcoxon-Searcy before founding his own joint venture, the Roberts-O'Brien Company, in 1930 at the age of 28. During World War II he manufactured airplane parts and, by 1941, had opened up a company in his own name, the Jerry O'Brien Company. Throughout the 1940s he manufactured car awnings under the name Weather Master Car Awning Company. During this time he also served on numerous public and private committees. He died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 49 on June 2, 1951. During his life he collected these excellent jades and assembled them in the silk box offered in this sale. TWO ARCHAIC CELADON JADE SWORD GUARDS, WARRING STATES PERIOD TO HAN DYNASTY TWO ARCHAIC CELADON JADE SWORD GUARDS, WARRING STATES PERIOD TO HAN DYNASTY China, c. 5 th century BC to 2 nd century AD. Comprising a sword guard of lozenge form, each side neatly carved and incised with a taotie mask, the stone of a celadon tone with opaque calcification; and a heart-shaped sword guard well carved with six raised C-scrolls centered by a dot, the translucent stone of a pale celadon tone with creamy white patches and minor russet and gray inclusions. Each with an oval aperture pierced through the center. (2) Provenance: The lozenge form sword guard: Formerly part of an important collection of archaic Chinese bronzes, built by three generations of the Chasseloupe-Laubat family in France. One side with an old collector’s number ‘45’. Prosper de Chasseloup-Laubat (1805-1873), was a prominent aristocrat, politician, and art collector who became Minister of the French Navy and the Colonies under Napoleon III, traveling extensively through all of Asia. His son Louis (1863-1954), an engineer in ship design, significantly expanded the family collection, also during his frequent travels throughout Asia. François (1904-1968), Prosper’s grandson, eventually inherited the family passion and became a renowned explorer and participant in the Hoggar Expedition. He was the first French explorer to reach English Malaysia, bringing back previously unpublished documents on the isolated Sakai tribes. As a collector, François Chasseloupe-Laubat was advised by Jean Claude Moreau-Gobard, an important French collector and dealer specializing in Asian art. The heart-shaped sword guard: From a private collection in the United Kingdom, by repute acquired at Christie’s London. With an old collector’s label, ‘4’. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, nibbling, and light surface scratches. China, Western Han dynasty, 2 nd century BC to 1 st century AD Of lozenge shape, the front finely carved in high relief with a lively chilong and the reverse in low relief with an angular scroll design centered by a median ridge. The translucent stone of a celadon tone with white clouds and darker inclusions, further with natural fissures and a small chip to one corner. Museum comparison: Compare two Western Han white jade sword guards carved with a chilong in high relief on one side and a taotie mask in low relief on the reverse, from Xiashan, Yongcheng, Henan province and now in the Henan Provincial Museum, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China, vol. 5, Henan, Beijing, 2005, nos. 219 and 220.
