Description

Spanish school of ca. 1700. "The Divine Shepherdess". Oil on copper in octagonal format. With ebonised wood frame and bronze ornaments. Spanish school of the 18th century. Measurements: 23 x 22 cm; 47 x 47 cm (frame). The singular invocation of the Virgin Mary as Divina Pastora was a genre that was born in Andalusia at the beginning of the 18th century, and from there it spread to other countries. Here we are faced with an archetypal representation of the theme, in which Mary holds a staff in her left hand and caresses one of the sheep with her right, while her absent gaze delves into foreboding and mystical thoughts. Mary's majestic yet gentle body is sculpted by a golden light that envelops everything in a supernatural atmosphere. What stands out in this artist's work is the combination of his ability to transport us to the miracle, as well as his naturalistic attention to the details of the vegetation and the almost human expressions of the animals, who have a biased and touching gaze, knowing that they are vulnerable. The octagonal frame is decorated on each side with gilded bronze baroque cherubs.
