The vast countryside panorama takes centre stage and this backdrop frames a scene from Jacob's life, narrated in the book of Genesis, where the audacity of this character is revealed. His uncle Laban allowed him to take from his flock all the black or blemished animals as payment for his herding services. Jacob took the animals to water in front of some striped sticks, as can be seen in the painting, so that they would mate in front of them, and in this way, the offspring would be born spotted, and thus, would become part of his flock, as it happened.
