Description

Spanish school, first half of the seventeenth century. "Ecce Homo. Oil on pine board. Presents faults and restorations. Measurements: 52 x 29,5 x 3 cm. In this painting of baroque school, the biblical episode of the Ecce Homo is developed with great descriptive eagerness and compositional dynamism. The figure of Christ with the crown of thorns, handcuffed and resigned to his fate, is flanked by Pilate (whom we see embarrassed and ashamed of his own cowardice) and two Roman soldiers. At street level, a group of apostles clamor for his release and the guards stifle their advance. Attention should be drawn to the contrast between the noble features of the followers of Jesus and the henchmen of the law. The painter expresses the drama of the event through the gesticulations and the characterization of the faces. Likewise, he extracts the just brilliance of the helmets and the silky qualities of the garments. The chiaroscuro models the anatomy and the garments, enhancing their colors. This panel dates from the Golden Age of Spanish painting.
