Description

Majorcan school of the eighteenth century. "Galleon by the coast". Oil on canvas. Relined. It presents Repainting. Measurements: 63 x 102 cm; 81 x 131,5 cm (frame). A great ship with the hull of wood carved with masks and volutes seems anchored next to a coast with old houses of walls upholstered of green in its flanks. They are perched on rough rocks. Inside the ship we see the silhouettes of some sailors. Other boats (small sailboats) ply the sea. The sails and flags flutter in such a way that we feel the force of the wind. Also the skillful way of resolving the swaying of the waves, with white strokes that striate the marine orography, give us an idea of a strong breeze. The sky is limpid, in spite of the clouds, which are white and thin, with the appearance of being fleeting and passing swiftly through the wide sky. The red flags (usually associated with war) contrast with the bucolic atmosphere that dominates the whole. In the period on which this painting is focused (17th or 18th centuries), the red color of the flags hoisted on the ships indicated that they were ready for battle. Stylistically, the author follows Dutch models of the seventeenth century, linked to the Utrecht school, such as Adam Willaerts.
