Description

FRANÇOIS D'ORBAY (France, 18th century). "Interior scene", 1752. Oil on canvas. Relined. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 72 x 90 cm; 84 x 103 cm (frame). Costumbrist scene signed by François D'Orbay. The painter follows Flemish models of the Flemish period, especially those in which the subject of the usury was treated, in the line of Marinus van Reymerswale. A family gathers in the tone of an accountant or money changer. Each of the faces, gestures and gestures denote expectation, revolving around the money being counted on the table. A little apart from the main group, a male character tries to sell a gold cross to a young woman. The psychological capture, the naturalism printed on the faces, the attentive description of coifs and lace, respond to a juicy descriptive desire. Painter active in the middle of the eighteenth century, the date of birth and death of Francisco de Orbay is unknown. A painting of the author is preserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dôle (Le Roi boit, 1749), and a drawing in the Kunstbibliothek Bremen (200 Französische Meister-Zeichnungen 1530-1830 aus der Kunstbibliothek Berlin, 1973). Bibliography: Catalogue of Catherine Scheck of the Museum of Fine Arts Dole "XVII ° and XVIII ° centuries, French paintings" pages.93, 94, N ° 50
