Textile; China, Qing dynasty, ca. 1900 Hand-embroidered silk. Measurements: 195 x 267 cm. Red silk fabric finely embroidered with golden thread and green and silver tones representing phytomorphic and zoomorphic motifs. That is to say, it combines millenary dragons and vegetable elements. Under the Qing, inherited art forms flourished and innovations of a technical, aesthetic and artisanal nature took place. High levels of literacy, a successful publishing industry, thriving cities and a Confucian emphasis on cultivation nurtured a lively and creative set of cultural fields.

Comprising a rectangular piece embroidered in Beijing stitch with two phoenixes amid peonies; a round badge embroidered in satin stitch with cranes and with silk lining; a square kesi woven badge with a crane and silk lining; a round kesi woven textile with flowers and silk lining; a long silk textile piece embroidered in satin stitch with floral sprays and a phoenix; and a square piece with sinuous dragons. Condition: Traces of use, some with losses, tears, loose threads, open seams, repairs, and soiling. Overall, still fair condition. Comprising a pair of silk sleeves embroidered in satin stitch and Beijing knot, with gold thread details, decorated with courtiers, ladies, and scholars in a water landscape interspersed with auspicious flowers. Also comprising a blue ground silk sleeve with birds, prunus, and pines embroidered in satin stitch. Provenance: Croatian private collection. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, some creasing, minor losses, browning, little stains, and few loose threads. The frames with nicks and light wear. Dimensions: Size ca. 52.5 x 12.5 cm (each) All framed behind glass. (3)

AN EMBROIDERED ‘JINGU GARDEN’ SILK PANEL, LATE QING DYNASTY AN EMBROIDERED ‘JINGU GARDEN’ SILK PANEL, LATE QING DYNASTY China, c. 1900s. The rectangular panel finely embroidered with courtiers in a palace garden scene surrounded by trees, phoenix, and rockwork, all framed by a brocade lotus border. The upper right reading ‘Jingu garden’. With silk lining and metal rings for suspension. Provenance: Austrian private collection. Condition: Good condition with light wear, few minuscule stains, few small tears, and loose threads, all as expected. Dimensions: Size 104.3 x 54.5 cm ‘Jingu garden’ is a poem written by the famous Tang dynasty poet Du Mu. The garden was located northeast of the present-day city of Luoyang.
