Description

Astronomical clock; France, late nineteenth century. Bronze and marble. It has flaws in the marble and needs restoration. Preserves pendulum. Signed on the dial. Measurements: 43 x 24 x 27,5 cm. Clock with a rouge griotte marble base with an expressive veining. In the center of the base is the case with a round black dial with gold-colored Roman numerals and Breguet hands. In the upper area there is a bronze mobile diorama representing the sun and the earth, as well as other dials with numerals and locations. An astronomical clock, horologium or orloj is a clock with special mechanisms and dials to display astronomical information, such as the relative positions of the Sun, the Moon, the zodiacal constellations and, sometimes, the main planets. This type of clocks were highly appreciated for the originality of the designs, for the material chosen in their realization. In some cases the machinery was hidden, giving a sense of mystery, and, of course, for its function as an important decorative element in the interior of a palace of a member of the upper class. It presents faults in the marble and needs restoration.
